On Tuesday, 2 German Shepard dogs belonging to Nottinghamshire Police had passed away after being left in a car.
I used to be a dog handler for a security company and I just cannot believe that this has happened. You never EVER leave a dog in a car on a hot day, it's just asking for trouble the thing is that leaving a bowl of water or having the window open slightly does not help, the heat can feel furnace like very rapidly.
Please, if you have a dog, please be very careful if you have a dog in the car...in fact be really careful even if your dog is at home. Here are some tips that might help keep your dog cool:
- If you leave your dog alone, they will usually find the coolest spot wherever you are.
- Do not think just because the window of your car is slightly open and there is a bowl of water in the car your dog will be ok, it doesn't stop the temperature rising so rapidly to lethal levels.
- Unless you have no choice, do not take your dog out for a walk until later in the day when it is cooler, it will make it more bearable for you too!
- I personally used to spray my dog reguarly to keep him cool, and Preston loved it! If you do this don't forget to spray the paws and underside of the dog too!
